As the fall season approaches, it can be easy to hunker down and wait out the winter. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are some things you can do to stay safe and add a little spice to your fall.

One thing to remember as days get shorter is that daylight saving time is ending on November 6. Be sure to get extra sleep a few days before so you’re not caught off guard by the time change. Flu season is here as well, so try to get your vaccinations early to avoid an accidental infection. [1]

Car care is also very important leading up to winter. It is the hardest season for cars; the weather can take a serious toll if not properly accounted for. Be sure to have your battery and tires checked this season before it gets too cold. [2] Les Schwab is just a mile and a half from campus and will do both for free.

In addition, leave your gas tank at least half full over the winter to prevent moisture build-up in the engine. Finally, consider investing in a window scraper. They cost just a few dollars at any gas station and are a must-have once temperatures dip below freezing.

However, autumn doesn’t just have to be a season of prep for winter; you can still get out and have fun. You can go for a hike, spend time at a local park, or take a drive through one of College Place’s neighborhoods. Maybe you can even jump in a leaf pile or two, just beware that some older ones may be full of bugs.

Even if you don’t feel like going outside, you can study and enjoy a warm drink at The Atlas or another local coffee shop. The Atlas offers cozy seating and a wonderful way to get out of the weather. If you’re looking for something new to try, I suggest a chai with oat milk. It adds a little extra kick to the cinnamon.
