Intramural Sports at Walla Walla University

In addition to intercollegiate athletics, Walla Walla University also offers intramural sports for all students.

Each quarter, intramural athletics begins with a fresh batch of sports. Options include flag football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and even softball. Participation in intramurals allows for students to compete in sports in a way that is pretty competitive, but still fun.

Luigi Tingson, a freshman nursing major, has been a part of flag football, basketball, and soccer intramurals this year. Something he likes about them is the opportunity to stay fit while having fun and meeting new people. [1] When it comes to potentially adding new sports, Tingson has a few ideas. Field hockey was floated as an option (“as a Canadian, I am obliged to say this” - Tingson), along with ultimate frisbee. [2]

A big part of intramurals is the inclusion of all students, regardless of skill level. As long as you can form a team, you can play! To help this goal, several of the sports split into different divisions either halfway through the season or for the playoffs. This allows teams who may be at a lower level than other teams to play more competitive games, and vice versa.

Several students had some feedback regarding some changes to intramurals. Amongst interviewees, there was an overall disdain for the intramurals app, which runs full popup ads seemingly every other click. Additionally, flag football was almost constantly plagued by wet grass, leading to slippery ball issues. Tingson recommended moving it from fall quarter to spring quarter, to resolve this issue. [3, 4]

With intramurals already in full swing for spring quarter, you can pull up to any upcoming intramural games to watch. Or, if you’re currently on a team, now is the time to start picking up wins before the playoffs arrive.
